Purpose led, proven outcomes
The Challenge
B had experienced years of instability before joining the service.
School environments had become overwhelming, leading to repeated exclusions and a move into home schooling. Multiple residential placements followed, each eventually breaking down due to anxiety, distress, and behaviours that services struggled to support.
There had also been time spent in a secure inpatient setting, where experiences added further trauma.
By the time B entered support, the situation was complex. Diagnoses included Autism, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, and a mild learning disability.
Day to day, anxiety was intense. B described it as a mind “churning like a washing machine”. Previous environments, especially those with close neighbours, often escalated distress and led to conflict.
The risk was clear. Without the right environment and support, stability in the community felt unlikely.
The Approach
The starting point was simple. Understand the person, not just the risk.
A completely tailored living environment was created, moving B into a detached rural cottage surrounded by nature. This removed many of the triggers that had caused previous placements to fail.
The home itself was adapted to support wellbeing. Reinforced walls, specialist windows, and sensory features like a hot tub and outdoor space helped create a setting where B could feel safe and in control.
Just as important was the approach to support.
B had found 2:1 staffing overwhelming and restrictive. That was listened to. A move to 1:1 support was agreed, with careful risk planning in place to make it sustainable.
From there, the focus shifted. Less about managing behaviour, more about building trust, routine, and purpose.
Daily life became centred around relationships, nature, and meaningful activity.
The Outcome
The difference has been significant.
B now lives somewhere they feel safe and want to stay. The fear of sudden change has reduced, and daily anxiety is more manageable.
Incidents of high distress and property damage are far lower than in previous placements. Stability has replaced crisis.
There’s also been a shift in identity.
Through activities like charity work, a Tree Fair, and training for a Channel swim, B has developed a sense of purpose and achievement.
What stands out is the independence.
Support has reduced, confidence has grown, and there is now a real sense of belonging in the community.
This is not just about managing risk. It’s about building a life that works for the person living it.
“When we focused on what mattered to B, not just the risks, everything changed.”
